Armitage Golf Club may not be the
longest or hardest layout in the Cumberland Valley, but it is certainly
one of the prettiest and best maintained. Course superintendent Mark
Jacobs must be trained in horticulture as well as agronomy.
A round at Armitage is like playing
golf in a garden. The greenery and variety of plants is impressive. Have
you ever blasted out of a sand trap with eight-foot-high grass growing in
the middle?
The foliage at Armitage will thrill a
botanist and the condition of the course will please a golfer. The greens
are immaculate, large and rolling. Yet they are manageable, and
three-putts can only be blamed on lack of skill. The traps are numerous
and the varied shape and sizes are filled with fluffy sand. Jacobs and
crew also sweat the details, such as good signage at the tee boxes showing
distance and layout and making sure water is in the ball washers.
